As a Vistage Chair, you are charged with helping your members steer their organisational ‘ships’ in the right direction...

Improve their capability by putting them behind the helm of a real one.

Learning Outcomes

An improved ability to translate strategy into action in a VUCA environment.

A feeling of working as one team with a shared vision.

An understanding of your reaction to uncertainty and its effect on risk-propensity.

Improved confidence to lead through change and be decisive.

Increased personal resilience and a more ‘growth mindset’.

A personal accomplishment – overcoming some anxieties and mastering new skills

Your executives and managers are tasked with steering the organisational ship in the right direction. Develop their capability by putting them on a real one.

It has been my mission, through my consultancy Ocean & Boardroom to give teams of organisational leaders a powerful outdoor experience, taking full command of a Round-the-World racing yacht, that will challenge, bond and create new positive behaviours that transfer directly back into the workplace.

Disruptive uncertainty is one of today’s biggest leadership challenges

Prepare your members for the post-Brexit uncertainty ahead with the ‘Ocean Racing’ Challenge: a unique on-the-water experience that simulates ocean racing – challenging them to compete for points while reacting to disruptive change and making decisions under pressure.

Your leaders will plan strategic sailing routes around navigational buoys to collect points.  They will then take command of 68 foot racing yachts to execute their plans, in competition to maximise their score.  Along the way, their plans will be disrupted by natural (which could have been anticipated) and unnatural (unexpected) events.  How will they respond?

This is a complex, multi-stage experience that will test their risk appetite, stretch their leadership skills, foster team cohesion and group problem solving; and above all, develop their ability to translate strategy into action in a disruptive, uncertain environment.

This experience is physically demanding, emotionally engaging and mentally challenging.  Sharing this experience, in an out-of-comfort-zone environment, will build lasting bond between members and their chairperson.

The honest discussion in the debrief session will really open them up to one another. Energy is high and defensiveness low – the ideal state for honest reflection, discussion and self-improvement.

It’s my mission, through my experiential learning consultancy Ocean & Boardroom to give your senior team a powerful VUCA experience, taking full command of a Round-the-World racing yacht.

This is a challenge that will bond, stretch and create positive behaviours that transfer directly back into the boardroom.

Four Competencies of great leaders

Great strategic leaders require four key competencies.

  • Contextual Mastery
  • Strategy Conversation Skills
  • Judgement
  • Behavioural Complexity

There is a tendency with many CEO’s to fall-back-on or over-rely on their contextual mastery (ie. Having greater expertise than others in the room) to push their point of view onto a team, stifling discussion and strategic collaboration. Most strategic business blunders can be traced back to a leader who ‘knew it all’ and didn’t sufficiently utilise their strategy conversation skills (seeking other’s input), judgement (weighing up competing options) and behavioural complexity (not letting their ego get in the way).

If you want to develop these three critical competencies of strategic leadership within your members, do this:

Let us put your  members in an unfamiliar, complex team situation where they now have zero contextual mastery – Navigating an ocean racing yacht. They’re ‘starting from scratch’ again, in an environment where they’re no more experienced than their peers – but they still have to lead, and perform.

Their only way to do this is to bring their strategic conversation skills, judgement and behavioural complexity to the fore. Using these capabilities exclusively, in an uncertain, emotion-rich team environment brings a powerful awareness to their importance and the need to keep them from being overshadowed by contextual mastery.
